The impact of rainforests

Kelsey Paulling, Biologist

Illustration

You might live near a rainforest, but knowing that only 3% of the world’s area offers rainforests, there is a high chance you don’t live close to one. No matter how far you live from a tropical rainforest, the blessings of global rainforests are reaching you, anyway.

Our December Special Guest was Kelsey, who works at the Academy of Sciences in San Francisco as a rainforest specialist. She explained what rainforests are, why they are important, and what we could do to protect them.

Unfortunately, due to deforestation and climate change, we are putting a lot of wildlife creatures in danger. Imagine losing completely such cool animals like golden frogs that live in some parts of the rainforests. Before they become extinct, we have to revive them without destroying the balance in nature. Kelsey’s job is to breed the animals in danger and secure an environment they can survive and transport them to their eventual habitats.

She suggested many ways to help at an individual level - even for kids. Spread the word about the importance of our environment, reduce/reuse/recycle, and choose responsible products (e.g. buy local produce), etc.
